CHAPTER TWELVE

On Monday morning, I got called to the office. Fortunately, it was only during gym and not Lecture. Unfortunately, Principal Klein had bad news.

"Your mother wants an inquiry into your eligibility. For studying here, I mean. It's a delicate situation, and I've already had a conversation with a friend who works for the state."

"We expected this, though." I sat in a seat in front of her desk. "Mr. Hickson did, anyway. That's why I’m at Messing, in the mediumship course. Right?"

"Mr. Hickson knows how to handle complicated students, which is one reason you and Hope are together in section two. We got lucky that their director allowed you on campus."

"So what's the problem now?"

"For some inscrutable reason, your mother vehemently denies you are the Sirin. She’s called into question the veracity of several witnesses, including Peabody Essex Museum staff, who witnessed your receipt of the feather. So she’s demanded a full investigation into your abilities. Which means a visit from the Director-General, I'm afraid."

"I'm not an extramagus." I gripped the armrests on the chair. "They’re changing regulations about them anyway. Also, Hope’s here, and she's not getting tested."

"Hope's family had tests done and documents drawn up years ago, verifying her abilities in the Registry. You don't have that. Since you’re a minor, your mother has the right to request the same thing."

“I know my rights. Mental and reproductive health. How did Hope's parents do it? Maybe your friend at the state board can arrange another way.”

“I’d love to hear your reasoning on that.”

"Those tests are basically torture. I saw Aliyah’s video last year. I’ll refuse it on the grounds of mental health."

"You can’t." Principal Klein shook her head. "Rest assured that this test isn’t traumatic. They won’t subject you to extramagus standards because you’re not one. They’ll photograph your aura, check for magic elements, check psychic ability, and have you demonstrate a partial shift."

"What about that extrahuman blood typing test?"

"I'll ask. It's still experimental, and I'm afraid even if they authorize it in your case, your mother can refuse. Unless you get legally emancipated."

“I know.” I sighed. “Maybe I should get on that.”

"You wouldn’t receive that judgment in time. But I agree, you should. For now, I’ll note in your record that you’re cooperating and keeping things as simple as possible."

"Principal Klein, thank you. You’ve already done so much to help just by believing me that first night. Most people don't understand unless they see it firsthand, exactly how my mother is."

"You forget I was principal during all three of Crow’s years here. Marge, Hugh, and Manny were students in my classroom. So I've seen plenty of Morgan’s ersatz parenting."

"So why all the paperwork?"

"I'm a firm believer in following CYA protocol."

"I've never heard of that."

"It would be massively unprofessional of me to spell out what that means. I’d wager you’ve used it yourself. Ask your brother what that means next time you visit him."

"I'll do that." I nodded. "Thanks."

"One more thing before I send you to Lecture, Mavis."

"What's that?"

"You must have some idea about your mother's reasoning.
